WHAT IS A SLIPPED DISC?

slipped disc injury bexley bankstownSlipped disc can refer to both herniated and bulging discs. If you’re looking for advice on slipped disc injury in Bankstown or Bexley, we can help.

The problem with a slipped disc is it may impinge on your nerves e.g. the sciatic nerve. This may contribute to back pain, leg and foot pain, difficulty in walking, bending and may restrict movement. You may also experience localised pain and swelling.

Both terms ‘bulging’ and ‘herniated’ discs are used interchangeably, but there are differences between the two. It might be helpful to understand their similarities.

What is a herniated disc

A herniated disc is ‘non-contained’. A tear or rupture is present and a portion of the gel-like nucleus pulposus has leaked into the spinal canal. A bulging disc may become a herniated disc when pressure on the outer wall of the disc ruptures.

What is a bulging Disc

A bulging disc, caused by pressure/injury on the disc, occurs when a disc bulges through a space in the spine. This is a common injury sustained to your spine and may occur in your lumbar spine (lower back), thoracic spine (upper and mid-back) or your cervical spine (neck).

CAUSES OF DISC PAIN

While bulging discs are often caused by degenerative changes as we age, there are other contributing factors which hasten this condition, such as:

  • Repeated lifting, bending, standing and driving
  • Improper lifting technique
  • Sport injury
  • Severe trauma, such as a car accident
  • A family history of disc disease
  • Poor posture

TREATMENT FOR SLIPPED DISCS IN BANKSTOWN AND BEXLEY

In some cases surgery may be recommended. However in the first instance, some cases of disc injury or disc pain may be addressed by manual therapy, including chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments may also help prevent cases of slipped discs from occurring in the first place.

Certain treatment plans may aim to relieve symptoms of pain and other symptoms resulting from a herniated disc

A consultation with your local chiropractor may address some related concerns including advice on good body mechanics, posture, and proper lifting technique which may help prevent disc wear and tear.

In some cases patients may be advised to start a course of conservative, physical therapy prior to considering surgical options (Revord). Conservative treatment options may include: exercise and stretching, ice therapy, chiropractic adjustments and/or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
